I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up.

Now that I’m grown up and I’m a writer, I notice I’m not quite the type of writer I always wanted to be.

Whoops, right?

This leaves me with two possible paths forward.  I can continue what I’m doing and wonder what could have been, or I can listen to Kurt’s advice.  “You are what you pretend to be,” he said, “so be careful what you pretend.”

My direction, I think, is pretty clear.  I’m going to start pretending to be something I’m not.  I’m going to start pretending I’m a real writer.

This was a cool piece. What provoked you to write about this short story? Were parts of the story experiences you really had as a kid, is it all true, or is all of it fiction?

this info is true. but i’m guessing you’re asking about “my first words”? some elements are true, but it’s mostly just balderdash that came out once i decided to sit down and start writing.

And instead of telling people I’m a “should-be” writer, maybe I’ll actually try to become one.

I’ve found writing to be the hardest part of writing. So once you start doing that, all the rest should fall into place. =]
